The unifying aspect across all industries and business models is being able to effectively manage your time and all of your tasks and priorities. While it is relishing to work in the quietness and comfort of your home, it is possible to still experience distractions that can interfere with your days’ work.

Time management is a skill which is extremely important as it helps you to stay on track. One of the advantages of working from home is the flexibility to create a personalized and cozy home office ambiance. Here are a few tips that will help you to meet your goals.

To-do lists

Starting your day with a to-do list is a great way to get things done no matter where you work from. The first thing you should do is to physically write the to-do list of all the things you would like to accomplish on a piece of paper. This helps you to stay on track and to attain your goals rather than blindly tackling the tasks. There’s certainly nothing as satisfying as crossing off a completed item on a list.

Set a timer

Efficiency is key if you have a tight schedule and you don’t have a full eight hours shift to complete everything you need to get done. It is thus advisable to calculate how much time you plan to spend on each task in order to get everything done by the end of the day. Set a timer when you start working on a task. A timer counting down might even inspire you to work harder.

Eliminate distractions

Your home is where you spend most of your free time in, a place where you relax but also where you keep your personal life organized. That’s why it might be difficult for some to adapt to the new circumstances of working from home especially because diversions are everywhere. With the TV a couple of footsteps away or some undone chores that are waiting to be finished. The challenge is thus to stay focused while working and to avoid the temptation of turning on the TV or folding the laundry in the meantime. Splitting your attention can hinder you to reach your best potential. Some people find listening to music helpful however, it is advisable to choose soft music or instrumental music that will not throw you off of work due to the lyrics.

Take a break

We can all relate to occasionally skipping our lunch breaks. When there is too much to do, having a lunch break is just not an option! Depending on your contract and working hours (full time or part time employee), taking an actual break is important and should be done without skipping. Close the computer if you can, avoid switching on the TV and relax for an hour or half an hour. Use the time to get in touch with the outside world again. Therefore, if the weather is nice outside, it is advisable to eat outside or go for a short walk. This leaves you refreshed, reenergized and ready to hit the ground running once you clock back in.

Reward yourself

To celebrate your achievements of your day’s goals or checking out all your to-do list, you should reward yourself with little things. It could be anything, from an evening walk after work, a nice bubble bath, a yoga session at home, a cold and refreshing lemonade or just some “me-time”! Rewarding yourself releases positive vibes that enhance your productivity and motivate you to overcome your next challenge!

With the right time management, working from home can be incredibly productive. Nonetheless, it is also easy to lose track of time when consumed with a lot of work. It is hence vital to maintain a healthy work-life balance by creating “no-go” zones for work devices, controlling home life interruptions, taking regular breaks and rewarding yourself after calling it a day!
